Summer may be fading and we may all be thinking of hunkering down for the colder months, but autumn is a great time to get out in the garden and plan ahead.<\/p>\n
September is an ideal time to plant spring flowering bulbs such as daffodils, crocus and hyacinths.<\/p>\n
Who doesn\u2019t love to see those first shoots pushing through the soil as winter gives way to spring, signalling the rebirth of the garden and the end (hopefully!) of the cold, dreary months of winter?<\/p>\n
Although you may want to leave the tulip bulbs until November and the alliums until early December, September is good for other bulbs because the soil is still warm.<\/p>\n
This will give them the chance to develop their root system so they flower in spring rather than summer.<\/p>\n
Daffodils are the epitome of spring and they work in borders, around shrubs and even poking up through the lawn if you desire. They are extremely versatile\u00a0 and will grow in most soils, in full sun or shade.<\/p>\n
Another welcome sight in late winter\/early spring are snowdrops, which thrive in moist, shady spots, while crocuses prefer a sunny spot with gritty soil.<\/p>\n
Growing from a corm rather than a true bulb, there are countless varieties of crocus to choose from, with colours from white to purple and everything in between.<\/p>\n
Hyacinths are another spring favourite. They are fantastically fragrant and suited to containers or flower beds, or you could consider a patch of grape hyacinth which grow vigorously in full sun or partial shade and well-drained solid.<\/p>\n

Planting them couldn\u2019t be easier and you can arrange them to fit in with the style of your garden by planting them haphazardly in your borders or neatly in a more structured display.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s a quick and simple job which brings big rewards. Just remember to plant them with the pointy end up and the roots down. If you\u2019re not sure, plant them on their side and they\u2019ll sort themselves.<\/p>\n
Larger bulbs like tulips and daffodils should be planted about six inches deep and smaller bulbs around 3-4cm. Cover with soil and a light layer of mulch and water well.<\/p>\n
